Spring Reset: Ancestral Wisdom for Modern Wellness

As winter fades, nature signals a time of renewal. Across traditions, and history, spring is seen as the perfect opportunity to cut back, cleanse, and renew.

Why Spring Is the Perfect Time to Implement Healthy Routines

Spring represents growth, light, and new beginnings. Historically, our ancestors tuned their routines to the seasons. For our bodies, it’s a natural time to:

  • Move from heavier winter foods to lighter, fresher meals.

  • Focus on detoxifying and energising the liver and digestive system.

  • Reset daily rhythms with more daylight and movement.

Across cultures, these shifts are mirrored in seasonal practices: fasting during Ramadan, Lenten moderation, and the symbolic “cleansing” of the Chinese New Year.

Ancestral Wisdom for Modern Wellness

Honour the wisdom of our ancestors with the following strategies:

  1. Eat Lighter, Seasonal Foods

Continue to eat warming, nutrient-dense meals, but incorporate lighter ingredients and dark leafy greens that help to clear, ground, and nourish the mind and body.

    • Focus on fresh seasonal produce: spring vegetables like leafy greens, asparagus, radishes, spring herbs, and sprouts.

    • Include bitter herbs like dandelion, arugula, or nettle to support natural liver detoxification pathways.

    • Reduce heavy, fatty, or processed foods that weigh down energy levels.

    • Add in sour foods, including lemon and kimchi.

  2. Mindful Fasting and Cutting Back

    • Consider a gentle intermittent fast, such as a 12-16 hour overnight fast.

    • Cut out evening snacking.

    • Practice moderation in media, social consumption, and spending, mirroring the reflective aspects of Lent and Ramadan.

    • Consistently reduce blue-light exposure at night.

  3. Move With the Season

    • Gentle morning movement like walking, stretching, yoga, or tai chi energises the body and mind.

    • Spend time outside to soak in natural light, which supports mood, circadian rhythm, and helps to obtain Vitamin D.

  4. Hydrate and Cleanse

    • Aim to drink 2 Litres of filtered water per day, so support the body's natural elimination process.

    • Drink herbal teas and healing bone broths.

    • Start the day with warm water and lemon ritual to gently wake up digestion.

  5. Reflect and Reset

    • Use this time to set intentions, journal, or practice mindfulness for 10 minutes per day.

    • Reflect on what habits you’d like to release and which ones to nurture in the months ahead.

    • Declutter paperwork, drawers, and areas for a clear space.

As a nutritional therapist, I use this seasonal window as an opportunity to help clients realign their health foundations. Spring is nature’s invitation to clear out what no longer serves us and embrace renewal.
